I knew that, but I just was not thinking when I made my reply. About the southest and eastest I know is Hanksville for wood and coprolites.

I heard the henrys have nice wood, but I've never noticed any, being a rookie I am still learning where to look and what to look for.
If it's not laying there right in front of me I usually don't see it. LOL. they tell me there is Chert around us in Caineville but I haven't been able to locate any, might be walking right by it, I think I will start hitting the rock shops and seeing what it looks like prior to polishing, knapping, etc... |

If your out around Hanksville, you might want to check out Bromide Basin and Eagle City sites. There are areas beyond the placer claimed area's that have
tiny flake gold. Pretty rugged country, but mighty pretty! Fall is the best time 'cause summer is usually a scorcher.
If this is the south-east area your talking about or maybe you mean down Moab way? There was placer gold recovered around Moab back a hundred years or so. They used cortaroid cloth in their sluices to collect the fine gold dust they found in the surface rock and dirt. They had to divert water to the placer ground which was located near where the Moab airport is at today. But if your just looking for fossilized dino-poop, I've never looked for the stuff. But I'm told it can be quite pretty! |

Thanks Argenta~!
I am in green rive the last week and not finding very much, have cocvered from price to GR back to buckhorn and up into castel dale, then down into moore and back to GR....the rock shops really didn't help, I know what it looks like all polished up but am likely walking by all kinds of stuff that I can't recognize in its 'raw' natural form. few dino footprints, lots of pretty rocks, LOl that's it so far. I am heading down temple mtn road tomorrow and into goblin, little wild horse and then back to GR. other than running into one guy staking out his lines for his uranium mine I have met no one once I am off the roads....trilobites and coral offered to me for sale in GR but no offer of where to find it or what it looks like in pure form in the dirt....tough hobby this is turning into. |

Patience, patience, is the key to finding interesting specimens. Reading is also helpful. One such site that may be of help to you is, http://geology.utah.gov/utahgeo/rockmineral/
There is a geology map which shows places where various metals have beeen found, including new minerals and even meteroites. Good luck! Oh, and by the way, Green River watermellons are the best I've ever tasted! That in it's self is a real treasure to the taste buds! |
