We been hounding around, alot this summer.We wanted to check in. Beginners luck is what is is said to be. We found some nice pieces last summer. But so far this summer it has been slim pickings. We did manage this weekend to find a small amber double terminated topaz. Is there a doctor for this bug We have?

We would like to go after agate but there are so many sites that we are a little overwhelmed. does anyone have a good site that is no more then a day trip and is fairly productive? please remember that if it was just me i would hit every site i could but we have a 4 year old that gets bored when we aren't finding anything. he was great at dugway, topaz, sunstone knoll and ever for obsidian but some of the fossil trip this summer have been a bust in his book. could anyone help with some...

I am taking a trip to John Jarvie Ranch( part of an archaeological field study-my wife and I are school teachers). As I indicated I will be traveling up I-80 to Green river Wyoming, then south on 191 back into Utah. My favorite things to collect are fossils, but my wife is more interested in rocks and minerals so if you know of anything along the way please post.

Hi I am new to the forum and live in Pocatello for a few more months while I finish Physician assistant School. As for rockhounding I have found some small quartz crystals up the Cherry Creek trail in the Mink Creek Area, If anyone is interested I will take them there or give directions

Also, I would like directions to the Fort Hall Mine area and some idea what to look for.
Also, any info on where the leaf fossil deposit up at pebble creek ski area...

I am returning to Utah the end of May 09 and will be wandering about as per usual with the hounds and even the wife, lol, but am all on my own June 22-25 or maybe 26th while DW is away visiting, I hope to add three things to my brand new collection this year, a good fossil of plant life, a good fossil fish, size unimportant, and a good specimen of Galena...other bits and pieces are never UNwanted, but if I can tick off those three this summer I will be well on my way with a new hobby and...

Coming back to the hobby after many years absence here. I am from St. George and am not to familiar with the prospects close to home. Does any one have any info of good collecting sites around here. It is going to be 70 degrees this weekend, and I am itching to go. I know there is a location of selenite crystals near (within 20 miles) here, but I can't find any information anywhere. If anyone has any info or would like to come along, just let me know.

So hibernation sucks!! We think it is time to start exploring again. We are playing with the idea of running down to topaz mountain on the 6th or 7th of march. We hope that the weather will be a bit nicer. Our main concern is snow and mud. I guess what I'm asking is has anybody been down there lately or in the past at this time of the year and does anyone have any tips on finding good specimens?

Who knows how much snow will end up there this winter but I would think May-June would be about right. Unless we have snow like last year. I went up to Trial lake last year in the 1st week of June and I had to hike over snow banks just to get to the lake and some of the edges of the lake had 2 foot snow banks.

But this would be in Summit county above Woodland, UT in Riley's canyon for fossilized Red Horn...

I am planning a trip to Eden Valley, the Blue Forest in Wyoming. Hoping to go on a Saturday in August. Does anyone have any recent information on the status of the collecting sites there? I've read a lot about how great the collecting is, but most of what I read is at least three years old. Well, I am finally getting to go out of town for a 4 day adventure this weekend. The wife and I are spending 4 days in Marysvale for our anniversary. I am planning on visiting 4 locations. The amethyst site at the top of Marysvale Canyon, Durkee Creek, the mines in Bullion Canyon and I am also going to check out what collecting opportunities might still be available around the Deer Trail mine since they have recently resumed operations there.

We are also going to take a day trip...

Marysvale in May

My wife and I are planning a trip to Marysvale in May. My main objectives are:

1. To see if there are still any collecting areas around the Deer Trail Mine. This mine resumed gold and silver operations a few years ago and I just want to check out if there is still anywhere we can go.

2. Planning on looking for amethyst and bixbyite at the location north of Marysvale near Big Rock Candy Mountain.

3. I am going to check out the mineral deposits in the Durkee Creek...

Stuck in the snow

Well...today was such a beautiful day, that after a 4 mile hike with the dogs, I ventured on the road to my private claim here in Bailey...and promptly got incredibly STUCK at 2.5 miles from civilization - facing downhill towards a ravine in 3 feet of snow, resting against a meager tree, and in my RENTAL vehicle (because hummer is getting fixed). The tires on the rental were crap and even in 4 low, I couldn't get out of my predicament! My cell phone...

Large Trip in Utah, March 23 through 29

Next to my native Colorado, Utah is my favorite state and playground. Haven't been to the east side of the state, however, so that is my destination goal this trip. Any tips on the Dugway area and or the Millford mining areas? Where are the gypsum rosettes found in Utah? Where are the mineral mountains where the smokies are found? This trip is a business trip for me...I've found a way to connect my life-long hobby with making a living
